"The timber industry and the Western Australian Dept of Conservation and Land Management, CALM, made a video recording of Wayne Cromby-Wilson felling this karri tree. The timber turned out to be useless and was burnt. The residue now lies on the forest floor. John Marshall was a CALM forestry officer who later added his name to the stump. The diameter of the top of this stump is 4.03 meters."--Photographer's note."Gardner 08 is arguably one of the greatest tragedies in the south west forest region. This block was entered on the register of the National Estate in 1994. In a conversation during February 2000 in Gardner 08 was "the most ancient and pristine area we had". He also stated that CALM decided to clearfell it after the timber industry was locked out of Jane and Giblett State Forests by protest actions. He justified the felling by stating that Gardner 08 "yielded the greatest density of cellulose (per given area) that we have ever known". Almost all of the "cellulose" ended up as woodchips for Japanese cardboard. Gardner 08 was included in the new Boorara Gardner National Park following the election if the Gallop Labor Government in February 2000."--Photographer's note
